Plant Description: Eyebright is an attractive, delicate plant, growing 2 to 8 inches tall. Commonly found in dry pastures, especially in chalky soil, it is an annual. From July to August or September, it produces tiny purplish-red or white flowers variegated with yellow. It has square, downy, branching stems that are erect and wiry. The leaves, 1/6"-1/2" long and approximately 1/4" broad, vary from narrow and pointed to almost round, and are in opposite pairs. It is a emi-parasitic plant, therefore, when transplanted into a garden, it needs to be protected by grass so that it can draw part of its nourishment from the roots of the grass and other plants.
Medicinal Properties &Uses:
Eyebright is an excellent remedy for problems of mucous membranes. It is especially useful for eyestrain, eye inflammations, stinging, tearing, and other ailments of the eyes. Additionally, because of its combination of anti-inflammatory and astringent properties, Eyebright greatly relieves other symptoms that often accompany runny, sore, itchy eyes due to colds or allergies. Used internally, it is a powerful anti-catarrhal, helping to alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms of nasal catarrh, sinusitis, and other congestive conditions. It also helps maintain good vision and eye health by supporting the liver and other organs in such a way as to cleanse the blood supply to the eyes. It also works well to calm over-sensitivity to light. Used as an external compress in conjunction with internal use, it is an effective treatment for conjunctivitis and blepharitis.
Dosage: 30-60 drops in water or juice, 2-3 times daily or as needed. Shake well before using.
